Tayrona

History

Tayrona National Park, located on the northern coast of Colombia near Santa Marta, is named after the indigenous Tayrona people who once inhabited the area. The Tayrona civilization thrived between the 1st and 16th centuries and was known for its advanced culture, architecture, and craftsmanship. They built complex stone pathways and settlements, including the famous archaeological site known as "Pueblito."

In 1969, the Colombian government established Tayrona National Park to protect the region's rich biodiversity, including tropical forests, coastal lagoons, and marine ecosystems. The park is home to numerous species of plants, animals, and birds, many of which are endemic to the region. It has become a popular destination for ecotourism, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and historical significance.
